ArchiNOVA Sochi office specializes in the design of villas and country houses in the southern latitudes. Two recently implemented projects demonstrate the variability of approaches to this typology: the first villa is strongly associated with the coastal towns of the Mediterranean, the second is a variation on the theme of less is more.

Customers from St. Petersburg wanted as much sun as possible – just like in their favorite city Ponta do Sol on the island of Madeira. The Portuguese holidays are undoubtedly reminiscent of the white plaster, large-format tiles, wooden shutters on the windows and an old olive tree on the patio. Nothing prevents access to light and heat: panoramic windows with thin aluminum profiles, energy-efficient double-glazed windows and tempered glass fences blur the boundary between the landscape and interiors.
Due to the significant height difference on the site, the house has two levels. From the street, it is presented by a rather modest two-storey volume, which connects to a covered parking for two cars. On the south side, facing the sea, the house opens onto three floors with balconies and a spacious terrace, which is shaded by a gallery and accentuated by natural travertine finishes. Laconic smoothed shapes complement the subtropical landscape and garden furniture, matched to the facades.
From the level of the entrance group and parking, the visitor gets to the ground floor with an office, a wardrobe and a spacious kitchen-living room, from where there is access to the terrace. On the second floor there are three bedrooms with balconies: guest, children’s and master. There is a cinema room, a kitchen-bar and a spa area hidden in the basement – from here there is access to the patio.

This villa is also located on a relief and has a similar structure: two levels, a relatively “blind” facade on the street side, panoramic glazing and terraces on the sea side, a similar planning solution of the interior spaces. The composition is based on the separation of functional blocks using cantilevered volumes and different cladding materials: white plaster, dark fiber cement and porcelain stoneware with a wood texture.
The small area of the plot is offset by a spacious patio on the lower level. Using the same material for the terrace and the floor of the kitchen-living room, the architects achieved the effect of flowing outdoor and indoor spaces: in the summer, when the slider windows are open, there is no boundary between them. The roof in use offers views of the sea, mountains and the city.
A “paired” villa with a similar architectural design has been built on an adjacent plot.
